Something about the image of a snowy street brings me to the painting of Lawren Harris, my favourite of the Group of 7 painters. I do not know that any of his snowy Victorian homes are actually of The Annex but many do look as though they could be. Harris’ neighbourhood paintings make me think of warmth inside and this classic song, despite the cold weather :

“Oh the weather outside is frightful,
But the fire is so delightful,
And since we’ve no place to go,
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!”

As much as it is wonderful to curl up in a blanket in front of the fire nestled in a wonderful Annex Victorian home there are many winter options when you step outside into the snowy streets. So go explore all the neighbourhood has to offer!

Here are the top things to do in The Annex in winter:

Cozy Film – Hot Doc Cinema (formerly known as Bloor Cinema) – Before Netflix this is what we did, remember those days? Back when we went to a movie theatre to watch a film on a screen larger than 15 inches and eat popcorn! Sounds nostalgic, doesn’t it?

Fun For All – Snakes and Lattes – Yes, you read that correctly, has your mind gone to “snakes and ladders”…good! When is the last time you played some board games? That long, eh? Maybe it’s time to grab a few friends and enjoy a board game like the old days! This is one of the best things to do in the Annex! The coffees are good and they do serve food so there is no reason to not stay a while!

Book Stores – There are a number of great used bookstores in the Annex from BMV Books, Seekers and Doug Miller Books. There is something magical about picking up a warn book and immersing yourself in those pages. You can cozy up to that fireplace or warm up in a coffee shop as you read your book.

Community Spirit – Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre – A wonderful community centre at the corner of Spadina and Bloor. It’s open to all. What better way to work on your Beach Bod during the winter? If you don’t want to be jogging the snowy streets you have the warmth and comfort of this Annex hub to help you get and stay fit through the winter.
