What Makes Cricket Club So Great?

Thanks to its ease of access, great schools, high level of amenities, and upscale shopping district, Cricket Club is quickly becoming one of Toronto’s most in-demand communities. The neighbourhood, which sits between Avenue Road and Yonge Street is bordered by Wilson Avenue to the North and Brooke Avenue to the South.

The area’s history dates back to the 1800s when it was purchased by prominent businessman William George Gooderham, owner of Gooderham and Worts distillery. The Toronto Cricket, Skating and Curling Club is a local landmark and where the neighbourhood takes its name.

Types of Homes

Most homes in the neighbourhood were built between the 1920s and 1940s. As a result of the area’s early social makeup, a variety of housing styles were built along its tree-lined streets. Small, 2-bedroom bungalows, Tudor-style cottages and large Georgian mansions can all be found in Cricket Club. These houses include many time-honoured features such as traditional bay windows,
hardwood floors, fireplaces, built-in cabinetry, private driveways and long frontages. Some modern properties are also beginning to pop up in the area as wealthier residents are drawn to the neighbourhood.

You Should See

The neighbourhood’s unofficial centrepiece, Toronto Cricket, Skating and Curling Club is one of the city’s most sought-after private athletic clubs. TCSCC features facilities for skating, squash, tennis, curling, cricket, lawn bowling, croquet, aerobics and swimming. The Armour Heights Community Centre is also a great place for family recreation, offering a children’s After-Four program as well as a Tiny Tots program. The nearby Yorkdale Shopping Centre is a go-to destination for high-end retail. The mall features Canada’s largest collection of designer labels and luxury brands, with Holt Renfrew and Alexander McQueen being stand-out shops.

Neighbourhood Hotspots

In addition to upscale retail, Cricket Club is also celebrated for its five-star restaurants. French bistro, Auberge du Pommier, has been serving guests since 1987. Described as the best French restaurant in Toronto, Auberge du Pommier’s atmosphere is carefully curated. The delicious food is presented exquisitely and with flair. Francobollo is known for incredible Italian and Mediterranean cuisine, beautiful décor, and high-quality service. The restaurant’s famous ‘garbage salad’ (yes it’s actually called garbage salad) is beloved by local foodies.

Getting Around

As Cricket Club sits in the city’s north end, it’s far from Toronto’s most walkable neighbourhood. Instead, residents primarily drive or use public transit to get around. There is some cycling infrastructure too. However, the area’s close proximity to Highway 401 makes travelling across the city fairly easy. In Cricket Club’s Northeastern corner, York Mills Station (TTC) offers regular bus and subway service into the city.
